Choosing a School that met MY needs

As I was saying, I was sold on online learning, but didn’t know if I really wanted to sit in front of a computer after working on a computer all day.

My perceptions of being glued to my computer changed quickly once I picked my program, school, and started my studies. I chose the Master of Science in Strategic Leadership Program at Mountain State University. I had researched many online universities and many different leadership programs, but I kept coming back to the site for MSU. There were two bullet points that jumped off the page: Promote dexterity in creative problem solving, and infuse the advantage of an organizational analysis and its use in managing change. Wow, I thought that these two features really meet what I want in my pursuit of lifelong learning and with the idea of application, I thought maybe, just maybe, I won’t be stuck at my computer reading and doing tests all day and night.

Well I was right and pleasantly surprised once I started the program. Of course there was some basic reading to get to know the theories and principles of Leadership, but the majority of the activities centered around applying the theories at my place of work. We journaled weekly on how we were able to lead in our organization or daily lives, and it didn’t focus on having a leadership title. The program is all about how you can lead regardless of what position you hold, even as a stay at home parent.

My perception of staring at a computer slowly faded, and I am now just 3 months from my dream becoming a reality! I will have my Masters this Summer, and even though, I believe in my heart that it was more a personal goal to go back to school and get my Masters, the foundation that I received in this program will help me in anything I pursue in life.

So if you have been putting off getting your degree – the question is, “WHY?” I did it, and you can’t use the excuse that you have been out of school too long. In fact, you can’t use any excuses. I am a mom, I tell my son that all the time. NO EXCUSES! So what are you waiting for. Take the risk and leap and you will see that it is worth it. Be superman (or superwoman) and fly (Ok, I’ll stop now since my son is looking over my shoulder and saying I’m embarrassing him!)
